About the museum
Grunnreisgården lies in Grunnreisa, a shallow bay at the outermost end of Reisfjorden with a view over Solbergfjorden, by RV 86 between Sørreisa and Finnsnes. Finds in the area show about 7,000 years of settlement. Midt-Troms Museum has managed the farm since 1999.
Only the main residential house has been preserved. It was built around 1820 by Rasmus Andreas Olsen as a two-storey log house, and a two-storey extension was added on the north side around 1880. The interior and exterior, including the windows, are roughly as they were in 1913. Farmers are known from 1714, and several families have owned the farm; the Hansen family ran, among other things, fishing, seal hunting and whaling. Sørreisa municipality took over the house in 1987, and a restoration the same year gave it a new turf roof, new sill beams, some new cladding and paint.
