About the museum
Fossmotunet is a rural heritage farmstead in Målselv that presents the history and culture of the dølene, settlers from Østerdalen and Gudbrandsdalen who moved to Målselv from the late 1700s. They brought building traditions, dialect and music from the valleys. The farmstead opened as a rural heritage farmstead in 1963, with Fossmostua, the well house and the smithy of the blacksmith Jon Stengrimsen as its starting point. Later, several buildings have been moved here from different places in the municipality.
Fossmogården was built by Ole Johnsen and Ingeborg Olsdatter, who received a clearing permit (rydningsseddel) in 1822. It became a large farm with salmon fishing rights (lakserett), and the engelskmannstua (the Englishman's house) from the 1860s was rented out to English salmon anglers. Fossmostua was rebuilt in 1872 as a house of two full storeys and was lived in until 1959. It is undergoing extensive restoration, and parts of it are used for exhibitions.
On the farmstead stand, among other buildings, Sandeggenfjøset from the 1890s, which originally stood at Øvre Sandeggen in Kirkesdalen and is 36.5 metres long, the storehouse (stabbur) from 1854 from Storbakken rectory, Målselv samvirkelag's first shop from 1916, and Rognmo school from around 1900.
