About the museum
Kramvigbrygga is located in Vika, close to Sørreisa town centre at the innermost end of Reisfjorden. The area has been a meeting place for people from the coast and the inland since time immemorial, and rich archaeological finds show a long history of settlement on the raised beach terraces around the fjord.
Trading began around 1870 as a butter cooperative for the farmers, Reisen Forbrugerforening (Reisen Consumer Association), which in 1877 opened a country store. Kramvigbrygga was built in the late 1880s and from 1891 operated as a trading house under the name M.A. Kramvig, with a shop, shipping and cargo agency, quay facilities and tank installations. During and before the Second World War, the quay at Vika was an important transshipment point for the construction of the airfield at Bardufoss. Until 1970, Vika was a thriving centre, before the trading place gradually moved to Straumen.
The museum took over the dilapidated building and has restored it in cooperation with Sørreisa historielag (Sørreisa Local History Society) and Kramvigbryggas venner (the Friends of Kramvigbrygga); the ground floor was completed in 2009. Today the house has permanent exhibitions on trade history, Sámi history, polar history and the Iron Age, and it is used for cultural events and as a meeting place for local residents.
