About the museum
Berg-Kragerø museum opened in 1955 at Berg by Hellefjorden in Kragerø. The museum grew out of the Homann family's summer residence, a pleasure estate (lystgård). In 1927 Henriette Marie “Jeia” Homann (1866–1943) bequeathed the whole property, with buildings and contents, for museum purposes. Several historic buildings have later been moved to the area.
The pleasure estate was a summer place for a cultural elite in the 1800s and early 1900s, when timber trading and later ice export brought wealth to the coastal town. The main house lies in a park with walking paths, a guest jetty and a bathing place.
The exhibitions deal with Kragerø's ice export to the world's harbours, working life at Tangen shipyard, coastal and holiday culture, and Edvard Munch's stay in Kragerø with the works of art he made there. In summer there are guided tours of the pleasure estate and of the cabin Solhaug.
