About the museum
Kittelsenhuset lies in the centre of Kragerø, between narrow lanes and winding streets. Theodor Kittelsen was born in this house on 27 April 1857. The family lived on the second floor, while his father, merchant Johannes Kittelsen, ran a shop on the ground floor. After the father's death in 1868 the family's finances changed dramatically.
Today the house is run by Telemark museum as a museum in the summer season. On the second floor parts of the flat have been recreated as they looked when the family lived there, and on the ground floor there is an exhibition room and a museum shop with Kittelsen products. The exhibition tells the story of the artist's life and work.
Kittelsen became known as a fairy-tale illustrator and nature painter. The painter Erik Werenskiold discovered his talent in 1881, and the fairy-tale collector Peter Chr. Asbjørnsen engaged him as an illustrator. His childhood town, Kragerø, shaped his art.
