About the museum
Brevik Bymuseum is housed in the old town hall on the island of Øya in Brevik, known as Cochegården. The building dates from the second half of the 1700s and was protected by Riksantikvaren in 1923. The museum tells the history of Brevik from the 1500s and shows the architecture and trading history that have shaped the town.
Three rooms have been restored with period-appropriate interiors. The building also holds an old post office, a trading booth (handelsbod) and a pharmacy, as well as a separate exhibition about the war and the occupation in Grenland. Another exhibition is devoted to the naval hero Cort Adeler.
Brevik Bymuseum was for a period part of the Telemark Museum foundation, but it was taken out of the consolidation with the other museums in Porsgrunn from 1 January 2020. Today the museum is owned by Stiftelsen Porsgrunnsmuseene, and Brevik historielag handles the summer openings and guided tours.
