About the museum
DuVerden maritime museum and science centre is an experience and learning centre for science, technology and maritime history in Porsgrunn. The centre is one of Norway's 13 regional science centres and has the role of regional science centre for Vestfold and Telemark. It is owned by Telemark Museum and is housed in Sjøfartens Hus by the river.
The exhibitions are interactive and use different ways of presenting content, such as text, pictures and film. The themes are placed in historical and cultural contexts. The newest exhibition is called “Fra årer til elektrisk” (From Oars to Electric) and has several new interactive installations. The centre also has a 3D cinema and a maritime exhibition.
Through agreements with municipalities and schools, DuVerden is a resource for schools and nurseries in Vestfold and Telemark, with learning programmes and activities. The centre also holds science shows, workshops and celebrations such as children's birthday parties, and events such as Kulturnatt (Culture Night).
