About the museum

Breheimsenteret is an authorised visitor centre for Jostedalsbreen National Park and Breheimen National Park. The centre is located in Jostedalen in Luster municipality, with a direct view of Nigardsbreen, and it is also the tourist information point for the area. The Brevegen road branches off from the centre and gives access to Nigardsbreen nature reserve, and the entrance to the national park lies at the boundary of the reserve.

In the exhibition visitors can learn about the two protected areas, which show some of the most varied nature in Norway, from lush, deep valleys to barren high mountains and glaciers. The exhibition, designed by Pål Sundhell, shows interactively how the glaciers and the climate have changed through history, how glaciers have shaped the landscape, and what it is like to live beside a glacier and use its resources. In the cinema hall a film takes the audience in, under and around Jostedalsbreen through the seasons.

The centre also has a lunch restaurant, a shop and tourist information, where visitors can book a glacier trip with Jostedal Breførarlag and Icetroll. The nature guide (naturrettlederen) gives lectures and receives school classes and nurseries with programmes linked to the competence goals in science, social studies and geography.

The exhibition is interactive, and the centre has a climbing room for children. Children under 10 have free admission. There are programmes for nurseries and primary schools.

Getting there & parking

The centre lies along County Road 604 in Jostedalen. The Brevegen road branches off at Villa Fjellheim and leads 3 km into Nigardsbreen nature reserve (toll station; payment by Vipps, card or invoice). In winter cross-country ski tracks run along the road.

Lunch restaurant with home-made dishes and local ingredients, with a view of Nigardsbreen, and its own dinner menu on Sundays. Ready-made lunch packages (Standard NOK 185, DeLuxe NOK 205, vegetarian NOK 205) can be ordered. The shop sells souvenirs, local products, food, books and maps, including cured sausage from Brelam.
