About the museum
Norsk Fjordsenter is the visitor and interpretation centre for the World Heritage site Vestnorsk fjordlandskap (West Norwegian Fjord Landscapes) and for the World Heritage area Geirangerfjorden. The area was placed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2005 because of its natural values, and the World Heritage area includes both the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord. The centre is run by the foundation Stiftinga Geirangerfjorden verdsarv, which works on interpretation, skills development and the protection of natural and cultural heritage.
The main exhibition on nature and culture in the Geirangerfjord shows visitors how the landscape was formed and how the forces of nature are still at work, including the rockslide at Åknes. Along the way you go a hundred years back in time, with buildings and farm tools from the fjord farms. The exhibition “Vår verdsarv” (“Our World Heritage”) presents Norway's eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the outdoor exhibition “Fjordafolket” (“The Fjord People”) shows bronze sculptures by Ola Stavseng, opened in September 2025.
The centre also has a cinema with a curved screen, the activity room Fjordheimen for children, changing art and theme exhibitions, a café and a shop. Around the centre there is an accessible outdoor area with a campfire site, a playground, a nature trail and a volleyball court.
