About the museum
Brekka bygdetun lies in the cultural area Brekka–Kistafoss in Tydal. The farm was originally a cotter's farm (husmannsplass) from the first half of the 1700s and was then under Østeraunet, down by the river. In the late 1870s the farm complex was moved to where it stands today, and over time more houses were added. The rural heritage farmstead (bygdetun) now has eleven buildings, including a main house (våningshus), cowshed, barn, stable, storehouse (bur), cooking house (eldhus) and smithy, and it is a typical open Trøndelag-style square farmyard.
The collection relates to daily life and farm work in the 1800s and consists of furniture, household goods, tools and implements, but also sleighs, carriages and larger farm machinery such as a tractor and a threshing machine. The main house also holds older fittings from Tydal's first permanent school, established in 1869, and a loft with a loom and textiles. One of the rooms has blue-painted panelling in Trøndelag style.
The farmyard is a central venue for local cultural life and is often used for events. The open-air theatre “Karolinernes hærtog i Tydal” is performed here every other year on fixed sets at the back of the main house. Today the site is run by private operators as “Brekka – Barnas Bygdetun”, with animals on the farm, activities for children, coffee sales and a handicraft exhibition.
