About the museum
Hilmohaugen is a cotter's farm (husmannsplass) at Hilmo, about 15 kilometres from Tydal town centre. The smallholding was cleared and built on around 1850 and lies on a rise with a wide view over the valley. The farmstead consists of four buildings that form an open square farmyard (firkanttun), and an outhouse stands a little way back at the edge of the forest.
The smallholding was lived in until 1980. Then the furniture and movable property were bequeathed to Tydal municipality, and since 1982 the place has functioned as a museum. The main house is a log-built timber building of two storeys. The kitchen has unpainted panelling and two sturdy red-painted doors with decoration in the form of stylised trees, a typical motif for the region.
The inventory mostly dates from the 1800s and the early 1900s and comprises furniture, household goods, textiles and tools. In addition there are personal items such as photographs, letters and pictures, which give a close picture of the people who lived on the smallholding for about 150 years.
