About the museum

Bymuseet i Bodø is housed in a building from 1903 in the middle of Bodø's city centre, next to Bodø Cathedral and the town hall. The building is among the oldest in the centre and is protected by Riksantikvaren.

The museum reopened in summer 2024 after a comprehensive renovation. The building was extended and upgraded to today's standard, and a lift was installed so that the museum is accessible to everyone.

In the museum's basement is the historic Tørrakvarium (dry aquarium), set up shortly after the Second World War. The aquarium is protected and is regarded as one of the first interactive exhibitions in Norway. On the ground floor there is an exhibition on Bodø's industrial history, and on the first floor there are changing exhibitions of Sámi art. Outside stands a Sámi gamme (turf hut). The museum is run by Nordlandsmuseet.
