About the museum
Norsk Luftfartsmuseum was opened by King Harald on 15 May 1994. The background was a group of aviation enthusiasts in Bodø who for many years collected and restored historic aircraft. After a political dispute over where a national aviation museum should be located, the choice fell on Bodø.
The museum is at Stormyra on the outskirts of the town centre and has around 10,000 square metres of exhibitions, a library, archive, photo collection, storage and a workshop for restoring aircraft. It is described as the largest aviation museum in the Nordic countries. The exhibitions were created in cooperation with Luftforsvarsmuseet (the Air Force Museum) and AVINOR Museum, so that three museums are combined in one.
In the military section, visitors can see the Spitfire, the Freedom Fighter, the Starfighter and the U-2 spy plane, among others. The civil collection includes the Twin Otter and the modern passenger aircraft Fokker F28. In addition, visitors can try their hand as pilots in the interactive exhibition Bli pilot (Become a Pilot), fly in a flight simulator and view the aircraft in a digital tour on the internet.
