About the museum
Telemark Museum opened in 1909 in Brekkeparken in Skien. The main building at Søndre Brekke was built in 1780 and is furnished in the Empire style, as it may have looked when Niels Aall lived there. Aall bought the property in 1810 and sold it to his son Hans Aall in 1830, and several other well-known families have lived at the farm.
The park is laid out in the English landscape style and has been open to the public since the museum opened. Here stand old farmhouse living rooms that show the cultural history of Telemark, a workers’ home from the early 20th century, an old shop from Kleiva, a children’s playroom, a pavilion and a pond. In spring around 27,000 tulip bulbs bloom in the park.
Visitors can enter the main house, the farmhouse living rooms and the newer museum building VEV. Brekkeparken is the main site of Telemark Museum, which also manages several other museums in the county.
