About the museum
Falch gamle handelssted (the old Falch trading post) lies right down by Tjongsfjorden in Rødøy, a short detour from the Kystriksveien. The site was in operation from the beginning of the 20th century and was owned by the Falch family. Over the years it served many functions in the village community: fish reception, cod-liver oil processing (trandamperi), general store, doctor’s surgery, medicine outlet (medisinutsalg) and net repair (notbøteri).
Today the trading post is a museum under Helgeland Museum. The shop fittings, with a broad range of goods from the first half of the 20th century, give an insight into how our great-grandparents shopped. The exhibition on doctor visits shows what it was like to go to the doctor around a hundred years ago.
The boat exhibition conveys coastal culture and fishing history with Nordland boats and other traditional fishing equipment. The wooden boat collection also includes the last boat built by the Maya archaeologist Gustav Strømsvik, with a figurehead taken from Maya mythology. In the summer season Kafé Mathilde serves coffee, ice cream and light refreshments, and in fine weather guests can sit on the quayside and look out over the fjord.
