About the museum
Ørnes trading post goes back to 1794, when the skipper of a jekt (sailing barge), Elling Pedersen, was granted the right to trade and to run an inn (gjestgiveri) on the site. It became an important hub along the coast at a time when towns were scarcely to be found and trading posts were the centres of the rural districts. For a long time the site was a meeting place for the local community. The last owners contributed to its development by building a deep-water quay and giving properties to a dairy and an old people's home.
Originally the trading post consisted of twelve to fourteen houses, and today three remain: the main house, the Gammelbakeriet (old bakery) and the smithy (smia), which are among the oldest houses in Ørnes. The buildings were protected in 1942. The site is owned by Meløy municipality and managed by Nordlandsmuseet.
In the main house visitors can learn about the trading post and its role in the development of society in Meløy. The old bakery has an exhibition on the sabotage operation “Operasjon Muskedunder” during the Second World War, when twelve men risked their lives to sabotage the Nazis' aluminium production in Glomfjord. The trading post also has a small café and a museum shop with local goods.
