Grønsvik kystfort

German coastal fort from the Second World War in Lurøy, with an exhibition and a memorial site for Soviet and Polish prisoners of war.

Opening hoursAdmission NOK 100

About the museum

During the occupation 1940–45 the German army and navy built the Atlantic Wall (Atlanterhavsvollen), a line of defence from the Spanish-French border to the Finnish Arctic coast. Around 350 coastal forts were built along the Norwegian coast, and Grønsvik kystfort in Lurøy is one of them. The fort conveys local occupation history.

On the site you can see the remains of fortifications, buildings and other infrastructure. The site is a memorial to the 77 Soviet and 65 Polish prisoners of war who were forced to build the coastal fort. A burial ground for seven Soviet prisoners who died during the construction was laid out by the sea. Some of the remains were dug up after the war and moved to the war cemetery at Tjøtta, but the burial ground with the memorial still stands at the fort.

The exhibition "Forræder" (Traitor) highlights radicalisation and making the wrong choices, conveyed through the comic-book world of Vegard Albert Skogmo, together with original historical photographs, documents and objects. The bunker complex and the surrounding area are open for free access all year round. The fort is a department of Helgeland Museum.
