About the museum
Fossesholm Herregård has roots in the Middle Ages. The farm was originally called Foss, and from the 1540s it was the seat of the large Foss estate, possibly Norway's first major enterprise in sawmilling and timber export to Europe.
In the 1760s Jørgen von Cappelen and Magdalena Darjes modernised the main building in rococo style, and much of the interior has been preserved. In 1973 Eiker Historielag bought the property, which has since been opened to the public as a museum and restored. The manor garden from the 1700s is being recreated.
Today Fossesholm is part of Buskerudmuseene and is run as a cultural venue for the whole family, with manor tours, a garden, a café, a shop and the Nedre Buskerud hjemmefrontmuseum.
