About the museum
Lågdalsmuseet was founded on 22 February 1924 by Tov Flatin, Per Mortensen and Otto Monsen, and is a regional museum for Kongsberg, Øvre Eiker, Flesberg, Rollag and Nore og Uvdal. In its first years the museum was housed in the old smelting works (smeltehytta) of Kongsberg Sølvverk (Kongsberg Silver Works), where the Norsk Bergverksmuseum (Norwegian Mining Museum) is located today. The museum is now within walking distance of the town centre, 10–15 minutes from Kongsberg station.
The museum manages 38 cultural history buildings from the 17th to the 20th century, three of which are protected. The site also includes Glitre gård (Glitre farm), which was home to several of the town's mining officials, and Norway's last surviving tower barn (tårnlåve). The main building was designed by the architectural firm Ljøterud og Ødegaard and has high conservation value in Kongsberg's cultural heritage plan.
The object collection comprises around 45,000 objects, and the photo collection around 196,000 photographs, related to Kongsberg, Sandsvær and Numedal. During the summer half-year the open-air museum is a living museum with grazing Norwegian livestock, and there are guided tours of the houses in the open-air museum.
