About the museum
Labromuseene lies by Labrofossen south of Kongsberg and consists of three museums. Norsk Vassdragsmuseum is housed in Labro power station (kraftstasjon) and shows the history of hydropower locally and nationally. Numedalslågens Fløtingsmuseum in Damhuset tells how forestry and timber floating worked in the Numedalslågen river system. Norsk Vegmuseum Labro, which was added in 2002, is to show the history of roads in the region.
The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and beneath the waterfall lies Olsberget, with a Bronze Age site containing rock carvings. Labro power station was designed by Herman Major Backer and completed in 1910. Labro Træsliberi built it, and Drammen municipality soon bought it and ran it through Drammen Elektrisitetsverk.
In 1994 a wall and the roof of the machine hall collapsed, and the power station could no longer produce electricity. Drammen Kraft and Lågdalsmuseet agreed that it suited a hydropower museum, and it was rebuilt. The museums opened in 2000 in the presence of Crown Prince Haakon Magnus.
