About the museum

Fredrikshalds Teater was built in 1838 by “Det dramatiske selskap i Fredrikshald” (the Dramatic Society of Fredrikshald) and is the country's only preserved baroque theatre. The auditorium has a sloping stage floor, and the theatre has many old stage sets. Unlike similar theatres in Europe, which were reserved for princes and kings, this one was used by the town's citizens, which gives the building a special history.

Besides the stage and auditorium, the building contains two parlours (stuer) and a ballroom. At the entrance there is a modern service facility. The whole building has recently been restored, both inside and out. The theatre auditorium seats no more than 256 people.

The theatre is still used for concerts, children's performances, guest performances and lectures, by both professionals and amateurs, all year round except in summer. Out of consideration for the old building, use is limited to 100 days a year. The theatre is owned and run by Østfoldmuseene as part of Halden museum, and all or part of the building can be rented for performances and meetings. Groups can book a guided tour that takes them behind the scenes in a building with many nooks and corners.
