About the museum
Halden museum – Fayegården is located by Busterudparken in the middle of Halden and is the city's museum of local history. The green Empire-style building was erected in 1830 as a residence for the merchant David Faye. Later the house has housed a library, a school, a dentist and a technical department. Today the entrance and the museum café are surrounded by a glass building and large chestnut trees.
The museum opened with historical exhibitions on 8 June 2024 and is run by Østfoldmuseene. Fayegården is owned by Halden kommunale pensjonskasse (the municipal pension fund), and Halden municipality supports the operation by covering the rent of the building. The exhibition "Halden kan: fabrikker & folk" (Halden can: factories & people) honours the entrepreneurs and workers who built a productive industrial town in the 1800s and 1900s, with emphasis on cotton spinning, iron foundries and the shoe and travel goods industry.
The museum also shows a digital exhibition on the Viking ship found at Gjellestad in 2018, developed together with mTabs, and has had exhibitions on individuals from the town's history, among them the fencing master Janken Wiel-Hansen, born in Halden in 1868. The museum shop is next to the café and sells gifts, historical reading material and nostalgic toys. Nearby are a bookshop, a bakery, Vannvogna Konsert og Kunsthall and Skofabrikken with a library and cinema.
