About the museum
Strömstads museum is in a mill storehouse from the 1880s by the Strömsån river in central Strömstad. The foundation of the museum was laid by a museum association formed in 1869, which is counted as Bohuslän’s oldest. Today the house functions as a city museum and InfoPoint, where visitors can also get help with tips on sights in the surrounding area.
The exhibitions tell of Strömstad’s dramatic history, from the herring periods in the 1700s and subsistence fishing to the spa-resort period from the late 1700s to the 1930s. Other themes are the smuggling of the 1920s, the Karlsgatebranden (the Karlsgatan fire), wartime emergency during the Second World War, Syco ceramics, the witch trials in northern Bohuslän in the 1670s and the stonecutters’ communities.
The museum has a picture archive from older Strömstad and a reference library where visitors can book time to research the collections. There is also a museum shop with literature and local products, and the museum arranges lectures and events.
