About the museum
Kongsten fort lies on a small hill within walking distance of Gamlebyen in Fredrikstad, and was built as a detached work of Fredrikstad fortress. The high ground east of the town gave a potential enemy a good starting point for artillery, and as early as 1677 a provisional defence work of earth and timber, called Svenske Skremme, had been set up. Between 1682 and 1685 a solid fort was built to plans by Major General Johan Caspar de Cicignon.
The fort today stands intact, with buildings, cannons, high walls and underground casemates. It is managed by Østfoldmuseene as part of Fredrikstad museum. The Proviantmagasinet and the Kommandantboligen can be rented for companies and events, and the same applies to the outdoor area and the casemate.
