About the museum
Kviteseid bygdetun was restored in 1907 and is considered one of Norway’s oldest open-air museums. Here stand twelve buildings that have been moved from various farms and put together to show what a wealthy farm may have looked like around 200 years ago.
Flekstveitstoga has a basement from the 17th century and an upper floor from 1738, and the living room on the ground floor is decorated by Talleiv Halvorson Espetveit, known as Talleiv Målar (Talleiv the Painter). Tveitloftet is a storehouse (stabbur) dated to the 14th century or earlier, and Flekstveitloftet is from the 18th century. In addition, a small 16th-century storehouse stands on the grounds.
Utsondhalli shows works by the sculptor Gunnar Utsond, who was born in Kviteseid in 1864. The farmstead lies right by Kviteseid gamle kyrkje, a stone church from around the 1170s dedicated to St Olav, and by the historic Kviteseid farm (Kviteseid-gården).
