About the museum
Norske Grenselosers Museum tells the story of the border guides (grenseloser), who during the German occupation of Norway from 1940 to 1945 led refugees and couriers across the border to Sweden. The museum is in a former schoolroom at Skjølåbråtan by Skjervangen, near the northern end of the Sootkanal and a few kilometres from the Swedish border. During the war the house was used as a hiding place for refugees and couriers.
The foundation Stiftelsen Norske grenselosers forening was established in 1994, and the museum opened in 1995. In 2010 the foundation merged with Flyktningeruta, and the museum is today run by Foreningen Flyktningeruta Norsk grenselosmuseum (the Flyktningeruta Norwegian Border Guide Museum Association). Flyktningeruta is a marked hiking trail of about a hundred kilometres that follows one of the escape routes from Skullerudstua in Oslo to the border with Sweden, and the museum is at the end of the trail.
The exhibition shows objects used in border crossings, Swedish lists of registered refugees and the authentic film “Flukten fra hakekorset” (The Escape from the Swastika), which shows refugee traffic during the war. It gives a close insight into the dangerous work the border guides carried out.
