About the museum
Eda Skans was built in 1657 and became over time the most important defensive installation against Norway. The museum portrays the history of the border from 1644 until the dissolution of the union with Norway in 1905 and is located in Norma's former factory premises (known as Patronen) in Åmotfors. The exhibition also includes local history of Åmotfors.
The collections consist of military-historical objects from western Värmland and the I2 Regiment, as well as from the Trossnäs training ground outside Karlstad: uniforms, weapons and a soldier's diary entries. Particularly noteworthy are parts and cargo from the crown barge (kronopråm) Kantinen, which sank in Lake Hugn in 1808. What was salvaged in 1987 is kept in a special display case with the right temperature and humidity.
Visitors can see an interior from the officers' mess at I2 in Karlstad, with a ceiling chandelier made of sabres and pistols, an authentic detention cell and billeting quarters from Trossnäs, as well as a small soldier's croft (knekttorp) from Järnskog. Among the rarities are the ice saw used to cut openings (vakar) in the ice, and the first machine gun produced in Swedish manufacture, with a rate of fire of up to 600 rounds per minute.
