About the museum
Beredskapsmuseet is located at Järnskogs hembygdsgård (homestead museum) south of Koppom, close to the national border with Norway. The museum shows what life was like for soldiers, refugees and civilians in western Värmland during the Second World War. The building is a military barracks from 1940 that was originally a Home Guard barracks in Holmedal.
In the barracks there are reconstructed settings from the years 1940–1945: a farmhouse kitchen with a maid's room, an officers' room with uniforms, plans for border defence and a German map of the border zone, as well as the barracks quarters of the emergency soldiers at the national border. There is also a list of the refugees who crossed the border from Norway within the Järnskog rural police district from autumn 1941 to May 1945, a total of 9,912 people. The collections include, among other things, a children's transport bag, a parachute, a courier radio and a horse-drawn transport sledge. A photo exhibition also tells of life in occupied Norway.
Outdoors there is a military area with a station building and a railway carriage that was used for troop transport. In the station building there is an exhibition from the war years and a film room showing films from the emergency period. The homestead museum opened in 1924 and consists of a 19th-century farm that was later used as a school. The site also includes several older buildings from the district, the country shop Hiombua and a summer café.
