About the museum
Grødalandstunet in Hå consists of the houses of two farms on their original sites, with buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors get an impression of how people on the sea farms (sjøgardene) of the Rogaland coast lived and worked around the middle of the 19th century or the early 20th century. On activity days guests can take part in play and tasks connected with work and food preparation in earlier times.
The old house, Gamlehuset, is a large Jæren house (jærhus) with a gable room (endekammers). The oldest part is the chamber (kammerset), which was probably built in 1715. The house was extended and altered several times, including in 1791 and 1848. In several places there are traces of ship timber from wrecks off Grødaland. The house was a dwelling until the Second World War and has been restored to the way Jæren houses are believed to have been furnished in the mid-19th century.
The farmstead originally belonged to Hå bygdemuseum, which was established in 1964. Grødalandstunet was transferred to Rogaland Folkemuseum in 1952, and in 1983 the site was returned to Hå municipality. Jærmuseet took over operations on 1 May 2002.
