Sážža – Senja naturhus

Nature house and museum at Øverbotn on Senja with the permanent exhibition “Folk & Natur” on Senja's nature, cultural history and Ånderdalen National Park.

Opening hours unknownAdmission NOK 80 Café

About the museum

Sážža is the Sami name for Senja. The nature house at Øverbotn is a joint base for Midt-Troms Museum and the Ånderdalen National Park board, which cooperate on managing and communicating the natural and cultural heritage of the island. The house is also a meeting place for the local community.

The permanent exhibition “Folk & Natur på Sážža/Senja” was made by Midt-Troms Museum and the Ånderdalen National Park board together with Statsforvalteren i Troms (the County Governor of Troms). It presents the protected areas of Senja and Ånderdalen National Park, and tells of geology, wildlife and cultural history, including Sami settlement. The exhibition uses interactive modules and has elements made for children and young people. Among the objects is a turf door from Nikolaigammen in Ner-Kaperdalen.

The building also contains a culture hall with concerts and events throughout the year, meeting rooms, Senja Handbryggeri and Tranøystua, where Foreningen Sážžas venner (the Friends of Sážža association) runs a café in the summer season and at events. Kaperdalen, one of the best-preserved field Sami settlements in Norway, lies about 11 kilometres away.
