About the museum
The Tranøy church site is mentioned several times in written sources from the Middle Ages, and the sources suggest that the first church was built before the Black Death in 1350. After the Black Death there was probably no permanent priest on the island until the 1730s. Then Tranøya again became a parsonage and was the religious centre of the district until 1960. Today the island has the status of a millennium site in Senja municipality.
The parsonage is owned by Senja municipality and has listed buildings. Midt-Troms Museum has for many years taken part in planning the use of Tranøya, and in the old parsonage the museum has a permanent exhibition. In two rooms on the first floor, the exhibition tells the history of Tranøya over the 2000 years the island has been inhabited.
The cultural trail on Tranøya shows traces from the Iron Age and the Viking Age, including large boathouse ruins (skipsnaust), boathouse foundations (nausttufter) and burial mounds (gravtufter). Every summer the Tranøyhelga (Tranøy weekend) is held with a church service, concerts, cultural walks and seminars, to which Midt-Troms Museum contributes guided tours and lectures. The tenants run Senja Moments, a guest farm with accommodation, food service and activities.
