About the museum
Kystmuseet i Sør-Trøndelag is based on Hitra and presents recent coastal culture, with particular emphasis on the history of the Norwegian aquaculture industry. The main building at Fillan is housed in the premises of the former Hitra dairy (meieri) and contains two permanent exhibitions, changing exhibitions, a museum shop, a museum café, the Hitra tourist office, the play corner “Fiskemottaket” and Meierisalen. The museum is part of Museene i Sør-Trøndelag (MiST).
The exhibition “Folket i Flatvika” takes visitors back to a coastal farm in 1920, and “Russerforliset” (The Russian Shipwreck) tells of the wreck of the Russian ship Jedinorog off Hitra in 1760. In the mini theatre “I levende live”, visitors can meet the people who lived in Flatvika.
The museum has four visitor sites in total. The aquaculture department is located in the Hitra express boat terminal at Sandstad, with the exhibitions “Pionerene” (The Pioneers) and “Ringer i vannet” (Rings in the Water). The Hemnskjela war memorial exhibition is located in a former German command bunker, and the cultural landscape and medieval church at Dolm also belong to the museum. The museum also offers trips to a fish farm.
