About the museum
Hans Nielsen Hauge was born at the farm Hauge in Rolvsøy on 3 April 1771 and lived until 1824. He was a lay preacher and social reformer, and the revival he set in motion left its mark on Norway, both religiously and socially, including through commercial activity and the call for popular participation. The childhood home, Hauges Minde, consists of two joined, protected buildings.
For the 250th anniversary of his birth in 2021, Hauges Minde was extended with a new visitor centre and a new exhibition. The centre opened on 3 June 2021 in the grey building next to the birthplace. After the anniversary, Stiftelsen Hans Nielsen Hauge Senteret took over the running of the museum, while Hauges Minde and Normisjon own the visitor centre.
The exhibition is divided into stations that follow Hauge's life and work, from the estate society (standssamfunnet) he grew up in, through his meetings with the bailiff and the priest and his spiritual experience, to questions of faith, work and the roots of modern Norway. The centre also has a writing room for students and scholarship holders, and the main exhibition hosts public meetings, talks and smaller concerts.
