About the museum
Elingaard lies on Onsøy outside Fredrikstad and has been a centre of power since the early Middle Ages. Excavations suggest that there was activity on the site as early as the Viking Age. The main building was erected in 1749, and the cellar is about a hundred years older. The estate has a special place in both national politics and women's history, and several guests, residents and servants have told of ghosts in the house.
Elingaard is owned and run by Østfoldmuseene – Fredrikstad Museum and is presented as the only museum in Norway that shows the lesser-known history of the nobility, through memories of the Huitfeldt family. Beside the main building and the courtyard there is a garden with bastions, moats and carp ponds.
On the estate grounds a nature and culture trail passes two cotter's farms, a mill pond and several ponds, burial grounds from the Bronze Age to the Viking Age, a hollow way, rock carvings, a bathing beach and a bathhouse.
