About the museum
Heddal stave church dates from the 1200s and is still a parish church. The church is built of pine and is about 25 metres long, 17 metres wide and 29 metres high, with three spires. Among its best-known details are the altar from 1667, 23 carved faces on the posts in the church interior, and the legend that the church was raised in three days.
Next to the church is the Prestegardslåven, where the exhibitions show the Sigurd legend, copies and reconstructions of medieval furniture, and saints from Heddal, including a reconstructed altar. On the top floor is Låvekirken (the Barn Church), which was completed in 1997 and has free admission. Kafé Olea and the shop are run beside the church.
