About the museum
Helleren kraftverksmuseum is located in the old Helleren power station in Grovfjord in Tjeldsund, built in 1958. The museum is run by Sør-Troms Museum in cooperation with Nordkraft and shows an important part of industrial history.
The river Hellerelva was approved for development in 1956. The machinery dates from 1907 (the turbines) and 1905 (the generator) and came from the Tinfos paper mill in Notodden, which replaced its old machines in the mid-1950s. At that plant Sam Eyde had carried out experimental production of artificial fertiliser, which led to the founding of Norsk Hydro. Vågsfjorden Kraftselskap bought the equipment and opened the power station in 1958 with two Voith turbines and an ASEA generator. Parts weighing up to 20 tonnes were transported by sledge on poor roads in Northern Norway. The machinery is regarded as unique in Norway, a low-head plant (lavtrykksanlegg) of very large dimensions. The contrast with the new power station beside it makes the museum well suited to showing a hundred years of technical development, including to school classes.
