About the museum
Narvik Museum tells the story of the construction and operation of the Ofotbanen (Ofoten Line), the long journey of the iron ore from Kiruna to the ice-free port of Narvik and onwards into the world, and of how the town of Narvik has developed over more than a hundred years. The museum is part of Museum Nord.
The museum is housed in NSB’s former administration building, a monumental masonry building from 1902 at the foot of Fagernesfjellet and a short walk from Narvik torv (the square). From the museum park there is a good view of the harbour and LKAB’s loading facility.
In the exhibitions visitors encounter slide shows, models and films, and can take a “togtur” (train trip) in an authentic railcar. The museum also has an exhibition on the electrification of the Ofotbanen, which took place in 1923 when the line switched from steam locomotives to electric locomotives, and it has its own electric ore locomotive, El. 12. In addition, the museum shows changing walking and art exhibitions during the year. The exhibitions are presented in Norwegian and English.
