About the museum
Skippergården in Hamnvik in Ibestad has a main house from around 1760. The central section is the oldest and is said to have been built by skipper Søren Mikkelsen Hass. In 1843 the district sheriff (lensmann) Ole Petter Schjølberg took over the farm and built what is now the main wing. From 1919 Tromsø Amtskole (county school) owned the property and used it as housing and lodging for pupils. Ibestad historielag (local history society) opened it as a museum in 1996, and Sør-Troms Museum runs it today.
The museum has an interior exhibition, a craft exhibition, a schoolroom and an exhibition on maritime coastal culture. Schools, nurseries, elderly care centres and other groups are welcome.
