About the museum
Gállogieddi Sámi open-air museum lies below the mountain at the innermost end of Evenesmarka in Evenes, north-east of Harstad/Narvik Airport. The farmstead is one of the few preserved Mark Sámi farmsteads of its kind. The first permanent settlement dates back to the end of the 18th century, when the reindeer-herding Sámi Jon Nilsen and his family settled here. The place shows how many reindeer-herding Sámi gradually became settled in the mark communities, and how farming, fishing, outfield livelihoods and reindeer herding together formed the basis of everyday life.
The museum opened in 1990, after the complex had been restored, and several buildings have been added since. Today it consists of a gamme (turf hut), a traditional lavvo with bow poles (buestangslavvo), a dwelling house, a cowshed building, a cooking house (eldhus), a storehouse (stabbur), a skjeltersjå, an earth cellar and a collection of old objects and tools. In the dwelling house there is an exhibition of traditional Sámi crafts, duodji.
Near the museum lies a signposted 2-kilometre cultural trail with Mark Sámi cultural monuments. The trail starts at the large stone that the place is named after and follows part of an old mountain route. A marked trail continues towards Snaufjellet with a view over Ofoten. The museum is run by Várdobáiki samisk senter (Várdobáiki Sámi Centre), and the Sámi festival Márkomeannu is held on site at the end of July every year.
