About the museum
Herøy bygdesamling is located at the old rectory on the island community of Herøy in Helgeland, reached by ferry or boat. The site consists of seven buildings: Borgstua, the stabbur (traditional storehouse), the cowshed, the earth cellar, Flæsbua, Storbåtnauste (Tenna) and Brygga (Svinøy). Four of the buildings date from the rectory period, and three have been moved from other places in the municipality. All buildings except the earth cellar are used for exhibitions.
The collection is one of the largest in Helgeland Museum and shows the farming, fishing, everyday life and celebrations of the island people through the centuries. The white main house was built in the 1780s and is still used as a parsonage.
Herøy church, known as the Helgeland Cathedral, is the nearest neighbour. It is a medieval church from the 12th century in Romanesque style, and the only one in Northern Norway with an apse. The church, archaeological finds and the farm's central location show that the place has been inhabited since the Iron Age, and the museum presents the last 1,500 years of local cultural history. In summer you can visit the exhibitions and drink coffee with old-fashioned waffles.
