About the museum
Vega Verdensarvsenter is the gateway to the Vegaøyan World Heritage Site, a living World Heritage area at the outermost edge of the Helgeland coast. Vegaøyan was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2004 and is Norway's first cultural landscape with this status. The centre is located on Gardsøya, north on Vega, right by the sea.
The main exhibition “Ville vakre Vega” takes visitors from the Stone Age to the present day and shows fishing, farming and the eider-duck tradition, with films, objects and audio stories from islanders. In addition there is an interactive geology exhibition made together with Trollfjell UNESCO Global Geopark, a film room and the digital exhibition “Vår Verdensarv” about UNESCO and World Heritage. The Children's World Heritage Centre (Barnas verdensarvsenter) is spread around the exhibitions, with play houses and a family quiz, among other things.
Outside the centre runs the Verdensarvstien (World Heritage Trail), with information boards on the cultural landscape, birds and marine life. The centre also has the Verdensarvkafeen café and a shop with local crafts and books.
