About the museum
Nordvika trading post lies between high mountains on the island of Dønna, a ferry trip from Sandnessjøen. From here, sailing-boat transport (jektefart) to Bergen was run, and the site has been an inn and school, post office, national telephone station and steamship quay. At its heyday in the 1880s there were sixteen buildings here, and today four remain.
Here visitors can become acquainted with the old Northern Norwegian trading culture. In summer there are exhibitions, a general store and coffee in a parlour (stue) whose wallpaper is decorated with real gold. The trading post lies 1.5 km north of Solfjellsjøen and is one of the especially valuable cultural landscape areas in Nordland.
The museum's collections include four diaries, called jekteprotokoller (sailing-boat logs), which Hans Martinius Zahl, the last Zahl at Nordvika, wrote on his voyages to Lofoten and Bergen in 1846–50. They have been digitised and transcribed. Nordvika is a branch of Helgeland Museum.
