About the museum
Hofsøya bygdemuseum on Stonglandet in Senja shows the life of the fisherman-farmer. The fisherman-farmers combined livestock, grain and potato growing with income from fishing. Stockfish sold in Bergen brought in flour and grain from Europe, as well as tools, clothing, decorations, tobacco and spirits.
On the farmyard stand Borterstua from the 1860s, with exhibitions on fishing, trade, self-sufficiency and resource use, as well as a schoolroom; Heimerstua from around 1875, with an interior from the early 1900s; and Gammelstua, which may date from the late 1700s, with baking equipment, milling equipment and carpentry tools. There is also a quern house (kvernhus), a boathouse (naust) with many boats and fishing gear, and a barn with a hayloft. The farmyard lies on an old farm mound (gårdshaug) from the Middle Ages, and a marked path leads to an excavation site with a 2,000-year-old Iron Age house, burial mounds and traces of Stone Age settlement.
