About the museum
Kveitmuseet is housed in the old fish receiving station at the fishing village of Skrolsvik in Senja municipality. The oldest parts of the building date from around 1870. Skrolsvik was a busy place for fish purchasing, export and shipping, and around 1900 kveite (halibut) was sent from here to England among other places. In the 1920s the fishing village declined, and there were many fluctuations through the 1900s. The fish receiving station was closed down, and the old shop closed in 1991–92.
The museum took over the site and established Kveitmuseet in the quay building. The exhibitions tell of the kveite, of the life and habits of the fish, and of folk belief, superstition and fishing customs associated with it. The museum addresses visitors of all ages.
In the same building you will find Senja litteraturmuseum (Senja Literary Museum) with the exhibition “Senja i litteraturen”, which presents writers connected with Senja in chronological order. Archaeological finds have been made around Skrolsvik, including the oldest known traces of people on Senja at Finnfjord, the foundations of houses from the Late Stone Age and many burial mounds from the Iron Age and Viking Age.
