About the museum
Horg Bygdatun lies at the farm Fossbakken just east of Gaulfossen and the E6 in Melhus. Melhus municipality bought the farm in 1984, and the site lies within what was once Horg parish and municipality (sogn og kommune). For that reason the old name was used for the open-air museum that was to be built up around the old-fashioned farm.
There has been settlement at Fossbakken since the second half of the 1600s, when a cotter's family settled here. At the end of the 1700s the farm Oppistu Foss was divided, and one of the farmers moved his half of the buildings to what is today the farmstead. The oldest houses on the farmstead date from this time.
When the open-air museum was established, a museum society (museumslag) was formed and a daily manager was employed. The museum society has ensured that worth-preserving buildings nearby have been moved to the museum grounds, and several of the houses have permanent exhibitions. East of the farmstead a nature and cultural trail runs through a landscape with geological, archaeological and historical sites, including six rock-carving fields (bergkunstfelt) at Foss.
