About the museum

Husantunet lies on a ledge above the Glomma river, north of the village of Alvdal, with a view over the district. The buildings on the Nordre Husan farm were protected in 1941, and after a long restoration Husantunet opened as a museum in 1958. According to architect Halvor Vreim of Riksantikvaren (the Directorate for Cultural Heritage), it is one of the country's best preserved antiquarian farmyards.

The farmyard is a clear example of a two-courtyard layout (to-tun), a type of farmyard that dominated in Nord-Østerdalen until around 1850, before the square courtyard took over. In total there are eighteen buildings, each with its own function, and buildings with similar uses stand close together: the living house and brewhouse are grouped near the water source, while the outbuildings, each with a high hay barn for one kind of animal, lie further north. The farm had both a summer living room and a winter living room, since housekeeping was simpler in summer.

The collection belongs to Alvdal municipality and is managed together with Anno Musea i Nord-Østerdalen. Today the farmyard is a gathering point in Alvdal with events in the summer. Visitors can use the digital guide KulturPunkt, with audio clips, text and pictures about life on the farm.
