About the museum
In 1988 Kari and Kjell Aukrust gave 250 drawings, watercolours and paintings to Alvdal, where Aukrust was born and grew up. The gift led to the founding of the Aukrustsenteret, which was later renamed Huset Aukrust. Aukrust himself said that his inspiration came from the Alvdal district.
The building was designed by the architect Sverre Fehn after an architectural competition held in the municipality, and it was opened by King Harald on 23 May 1996. The materials are stone, concrete, pine and glass. The centre had large deficits in its first years, and in 1999 the main shareholders wrote off the debt. Alvdal municipality bought the building and became the sole shareholder. Today the municipality owns the building, and operations are run by Aukrust AS, which is owned by the municipality and Aukruststiftelsen (the Aukrust Foundation).
Visitors meet figures such as Solan, Ludvig and Emanuel Desperados, the editorial office of Flåklypa Tidende and Reodor Felgen's workshop, where they can make their own chocolate. The Flåklypatoppen opened in 2014 with Solan Gundersen's moon rocket. The house also contains Flåklypasalen, a café, a shop and tourist information for Alvdal.
