About the museum
Kystmuseet Norveg takes visitors on a journey through 10,000 years of the history of the Namdal coast. The museum does not see itself as a traditional museum behind a fence and gate. It is part of Museet Midt. The main building, Norveg in Rørvik, was designed by architect Guðmundur Jónsson and was nominated for the European architecture prize, the Mies van der Rohe Award, in 2005; the museum was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2006.
Norveg presents the permanent exhibition “Fra steinalder til høyteknologisk samfunn” about Norway as a coastal and fishing nation, together with a visitor centre for aquaculture. The sea-based part takes place with the sightseeing boat MS Sunniva, out to a salmon farm and to Sør-Gjæslingan. Norveg also has a café, a museum shop, a cinema, a gallery and rooms for conferences and cultural activities.
The museum also includes Berggården, the trading house that Johan and Betzy Berg set up in the 1870s, with the almost untouched Nordli shop and Rørvik Kaffistova from 1913. Along the museum harbour basin lie Bryggene, five wharf buildings that house the boat collection, and Telemuseet Rørvik shows the history of communication. The historic fishing village Sør-Gjæslingan on the Namdal coast is also part of the museum.
