About the museum
Øver-Dun is the childhood home of the author Olav Duun (1876–1939), who grew up on the farm on the island of Jøa in Namdalen and lived there for the first 25 years of his life. The landscape, people and sea around Jøa shape his novels, not least the novel series about the Juvik family (Juvikfolket).
The house has been preserved and furnished as it looked during Duun's upbringing, with simple rooms and a restrained interior that reflects the parents' Christian outlook. It was opened to the public in 2011 and was moved out of the farmyard to a new site near the Duun monument (Duun-bautaen).
From the house visitors can see several of the places that recur in his writing, among them the farm Hov, which in the books is called Håberg, Bragstadlandet, which becomes “Landet i eventyre” (the land of fairy tales), and the sea area Folla. The Olav Duun Foundation in Namdalen is behind the presentation, and the house is also used during the Olav Duun Festival.
