About the museum
Namdalsmuseet was founded in 1926 on the folk museum model as a district museum for the whole of Namdalen. The museum is today a department of Museet Midt and works in particular on the cultural history of central and inner Namdal. The open-air museum is located by Kjærlighetsstien (the Love Path) in Namsos.
The building collection consists of over twenty houses that have been moved here from rural districts in the region, including Hallvardmolåna from 1828, Svarliaunstua from around 1800, Bertnemlåven from the 1790s, the cotter's farm Vassengstu, a farm quern house, a smithy, a schoolroom and several storehouses. The collection comprises over 13,000 objects and photographs, with the main emphasis on traditional farming culture, forest and outfield history, and hospital history. The oldest objects date from the 16th century.
The Hospital Museum (Sykehusmuseet) shows health care in Namdalen from the late 18th century up to modern times. In the 1700-tallstunet (the 18th-century farmyard), the story is told of life in Namdalen during and after the union with Denmark. A new exhibition building, Paviljongen, shows, among other things, an old car and an old motorcycle, and a larger exhibition on transport history is under way.
